Support

For information on how to arrange support at home within your area, visit the Carmarthenshire and Swansea council pages.

Where you need to organise support within your home, there are rules in place regarding how much you need to pay towards your care.  Those with sufficient financial resources may, of course, be able to pay for the support independently, however, where this is not possible help is available – but there are rules that may require you to pay some costs towards these services.

You may need to pay up to £100 per week towards non residential care if you have a high disposable income or savings over £24,000 (not including the value of your home), more information can be found on the gov.wales website here.

If you qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant you could receive funding, up to £36,000 in Wales, to make your home more accessible, or if you need specialist equipment to help you manage day-to-day tasks more safely and easily.

If you are elderly, disabled or have a long term health condition, you can apply for funding via your local council.  Grants are means-tested (based on your income and savings) and usually require an assessment by an Occupational Therapist.  The Moneyhelper.org website has lots of useful information about how the grant works and how to apply, click the link below to visit. If you you live in a larger property than you would need if you or another occupant were not disabled, or if you make adaptations to your home (e..g using a Disabled Facilities Grant) and it pushes your home into a higher council tax band, you might be able to apply for the Disabled Band Reduction Scheme.

More information on council tax reductions and benefits calculator can be found on the AgeUK website.

Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.  It is paid at 2 different rates and how much you get depends on the level of care that you need because of your disability. You could get £72.65 or £108.55 a week to help with personal support if you’re both: physically or mentally disabled and State Pension age or older. It does not cover mobility needs but you could get extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction if you get Attendance Allowance.
